Motivation and Banking
Introduction Motivation can broadly be described as the driving inner or outer force through which we achieve various desired life goals. It is either intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation refers to the driving inner force mostly associated with enjoyment, high educational achievements. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, relates to a driving external force in oneââ¬â¢s life to achieve desired goals and objectives.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Motivation and Banking specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Such motivations include can be looked at as rewards for efforts implemented to achieve something. The rewards may be in the form of money for a task accomplished, grades attained in a school setting, coercion and the threat of punishment because of indulgence in a situation (Lee, 78). For instance, his parents may tell a student that he will not be catered for in basic and essential needs failure to achieve a certain grade. Motivation additionally and in accordance to various motivation theories can be defined as a need to minimize physical pain or suffering and maximize pleasure. Discussion The respondents as illustrate were in the range of 17 years and 24 and above years. Itââ¬â¢s evident that most the respondentââ¬â¢s stay in Australia is not too long. For instance, for most female its in the range of 7 months to one year. For most male, itââ¬â¢s between below three months and four to six months. On a survey on the major reason for finding a job being the salary as the motivating factor, most male were indifferent on the issue while most of the women were of the opinion that itââ¬â¢s the chief reason as to why people find a job. On the issue of whether most people love the job more than the salary, most male were observed to agree with the statement. The female were quite indifferent in agreeing with statement and some were undecided. Most men agreed that they st udy more courses for the higher salary. A good number of females were also in agreement with that notion. Freedom is very essential while performing oneââ¬â¢s work as shown in the survey as most respondents agreed that they require their own freedom to perform their work duties. As to whether the job performed suits who you are, most female agreed with that notion while quite a good number of men also agreed with the same. Its thus evident that the job performed actually suits who we are. A mixed reaction was obtained on to whether people should work harder with increased incentives. Most were in the range of undecided and those who agreed with such sentiments. As to whether one should travel to many places with the job that interests you a mixed reaction was also obtained with some strongly agreeing and others were actually undecided.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Information technology has brought in greater convenience, effectiveness and efficiency and can to offer more banking products to customers in the banking sector. For instance, banks offer Automated Teller Machines (ATMS), EFTPOST, telephone banking and internet banking which are modern and convenient modes of faster banking. The banks highly recommend and encourage their customers to use the telephone and or internet banking, as opposed to the earlier branch based visit services. The extension of the internet banking services goes along with the customer perception, acceptance and the satisfaction derived from the use of such services. The internet banking transaction services was introduced in the 1980ââ¬â¢s and has seen profuse growth and is highly expected to see more growth with the development of more technological innovations. This is as was denoted by Peterson in 2006. A survey conducted consisting of sixty shoppers in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn in 2006 focused on the banking services used by customers, the population that uses and that which does not use the e-banking services. Also, the consumer behavior as to the possible reasons why customers decide on the appropriate mode of banking transaction was looked into. Out of 60 respondents, 34 were men and 26 were women. Income wise, it was shown that the majority of people earned below $1500 per week in the age bracket of 18 to 40 years. A portion of those who were 40 years and above earned between $3000 and $ 5000 per month. Most people interviewed held savings account. Non-internet banking services users consisted of 14%, and were less likely to hold a cheque account compared to e-bank users who consisted of 33%. The access of banking services through the branch consisted of 83% of the respondents. The commo n mode of accessing banking services was by use of the Automated Teller Machines and EFTPOST. The survey showed that ATMS were often used 60% of the population used in the survey, 37% of the respondents used EFTPOST, 7% never used ATMS and 25% never used EFTPOST. Telephone and internet banking were not intensively used. Recommendations Itââ¬â¢s most evident that most people really value investing in themselves through work with the major goal and expectation of a motivating factor reward in the form of monetary terms. Conducive measures therefore to practice peopleââ¬â¢s hard earned skills on the job needs to be put in place to encourage them to work even much harder. Since its evident that study of more courses goes in line with higher salaries, such different courses should be well laid emphasis on and mentorship on the same should be highly encouraged.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Motivation and Banking specifically for you for only $16.0 5 $11/page Learn More People should be encouraged to work hard for what they really believe in and actually dream to achieve in their future as most jobs suit who they are. As most people would go greater lengths in terms of achieving their dreams of the work they desire most, they should be widely encouraged to follow their dreams even if it would mean travelling a lot. The basic reason for using the banking services as shown by most people is to gaining access to cash used for different transactional purposes. The second most reason is making of deposits through the cheque or cash. A few used the banking services to check for their bank balances (Lee, 103). The main advantage of the telephone and internet use of banking services is that they do not require the physical appearance of the person concerned (Gkoutzinis, 243). Additionally, the modes do not require the use of cards to identify with the person, but rely solely on electronic transmission of identification of access codes and numbers or appropriate passwords. The major reason for use of e-banking as portrayed by a number of respondents was due to time-saving mechanism, convenience, full time availability and cost effective. This is because the e-banking services can be accessed majorly from home, the work place, and even the study place. The reasons as to why some people do not use the internet banking services includes the ignorance that people may have on the use and access of the e-banking services. Also, some quote of security reasons due to the increasing number of hackers and robberies. Nevertheless, some thought it very useful to learn on the use of the e-banking banking services. Lack of adequate information on the use of the e-banking services was a major reason as to why some people did not use these services. E-banking permits the full access to account balances, funds transfers between accounts and account payments. The accessibility to the bank account are varied from dif ferent customers for instance some have daily access depending on their needs, while others on a monthly basis. Those who frequently use the bank services have a favor in using the e-banking services. Most of e-bank uses, in fact, have more than one account. The income levels of different bank service users determine the account that they operate. The high-income earners for instance use the e-banking facility frequently since they have numerous transactions and e-banking have an ideal convenient platform for this. There is a great desire for more information as postulated by the non e-banking users.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! People should also strive to achieve that which they believe in. Also, superb working conditions should be put in place to allow for people to work in conducive conditions which will support their lives. The banks hence have a role to educate the bank services users on the importance of the use of the internet banking. In conclusion, it is apparent that the banking services have changed greatly in the recent years and customers have resulted to the use of ATMS and EFTPOST, telephone banking and internet banking. The gender is highly insignificant in the determination of the account to be used by individuals. It is also evident that high-income earners are likely to adopt the use of telephone banking and internet banking with a lower usage by the lower-income earners. Banks, therefore, have a duty to promote their e-banking services and enlighten their customers on their major importance. Cited work Gkoutzinis, Apostolos Ath. Eastern Coral Snake Facts
Eastern Coral Snake Facts The eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius) is a highly venomous snake found in the southeastern United States. Eastern coral snakes are brightly colored with rings of red, black, and yellow scales. Folk rhymes to remember the difference between the coral snake and the nonvenomous king snake (Lampropeltisà sp.) include red on yellow kills a fellow, red on black venom lack and red touching black, friend of Jack; red touching yellow, youre a dead fellow. However, these mnemonics are unreliable because of differences between individual snakes and because other species of coral snakes do have adjoining red and black bands. Fast Facts: Eastern Coral Snake Scientific Name: Micrurus fulviusCommon Names: Eastern coral snake, common coral snake, American cobra, harlequin coral snake, thunder-and-lightning snakeBasic Animal Group: ReptileSize: 18-30 inchesLifespan: 7 yearsDiet: CarnivoreHabitat: Southeastern United StatesPopulation: 100,000Conservation Status: Least Concern Description Coral snakes are related to cobras, sea snakes, and mambas (family Elapidae). Like these snakes, they have round pupils and lack heat-sensing pits. Coral snakes have small, fixed fangs. The eastern coral snake is medium-sized and slender, generally ranging between 18 and 30 inches in length. The longest reported specimen was 48 inches. Mature females are longer than males, but males have longer tails. The snakes have smooth dorsal scales in a colored ring pattern of wide red and black rings separated by narrow yellow rings. Eastern coral snakes always have black heads. The narrow heads are nearly indistinguishable from the tails. Habitat and Distribution The eastern coral snake lives in the United States from coastal North Carolina to the tip of Florida and west into eastern Louisiana. The snakes prefer the coastal plains, but also inhabit wooded areas further inland that are subject to seasonal flooding. A few snakes have been documented as far north as Kentucky. Also, there is controversy regarding whether the Texas coral snake (which extends into Mexico) is the same species as the eastern coral snake. Coral snake species and range in the United States. HowardMorland, public domain Diet and Behavior Eastern coral snakes are carnivores that prey upon frogs, lizards, and snakes (including other coral snakes). The snakes spend most of their time underground, usually venturing out to hunt in the cooler dawn and dusk hours. When a coral snake is threatened, it elevates and curls the tip of its tail and may fart, releasing gas from its cloaca to startle potential predators. The species is not aggressive. Reproduction and Offspring Because the species is so secretive, relatively little is known about coral snake reproduction. Eastern coral snake females lay between 3 and 12 eggs in June that hatch in September. The young range from 7 to 9 inches at birth and are venomous. The life expectancy of wild coral snakes is unknown, but the animal lives about 7 years in captivity. Conservation Status The IUCN classifies eastern coral snake conservation status as least concern. A 2004 survey estimated the adult population at 100,000 snakes. Researchers believe the population is stable or perhaps slowly declining. Threats include motor vehicles, habitat loss and degradation from residential and commercial development, and issues with invasive species. For example, coral snake numbers declined in Alabama when the fire ant was introduced and preyed upon eggs and young snakes. Venom and Bites The Mexican kingsnake is a nonvenomous snake that resembles the eastern coral snake. Paul Starosta, Getty Images Coral snake venom is a potent neurotoxin. A single snake has enough venom to kill five adults, but the snake cannot deliver all of its venom at once plus envenomation only occurs in about 40% of bites. Even then, bites and fatalities are extremely rare. The most common cause of snakebite comes from mistaking a coral snake for a similarly-colored nonvenomous snake. Only one death has been reported since the antivenin became available in the 1960s (in 2006, confirmed in 2009). Since then, coral snake antivenin production has been discontinued due to lack of profitability. An eastern coral snake bite may be painless. Symptoms develop between 2 and 13 hours after the bite and include progressive weakness, facial nerve palsy, and respiratory failure. Since antivenin is no longer available, treatment consists of respiratory support, wound care, and antibiotic administration to prevent infection. Pets are more likely than humans to get bitten by coral snakes. They often survive if given prompt veterinary care. Sources Campbell, Jonathan A.; Lamar, William W. Compare contrast romeo and juliet with west side story Essay
Compare contrast romeo and juliet with west side story - Essay Example First, the plays were written in different periods, so their characters are not similar. This is a statement to establish in the following discussion/comparison of the two plays. The two stories revolve around disagreements between families with opposing values and conclude in the demise of young adults. This is because the young people involved had a notion that their deep love to each other would surmount the aggression between the families (Gibbons 3). In Romeo and Juliet, Julietââ¬â¢s family (Capulet) considered themselves as noble, while Romeoââ¬â¢s family (Montague) was a humble family. Juliet was a young virgin girl 14 years of age, who had been promised to marry a man of the familyââ¬â¢s own choice. However, she cared less for the man. It occurred that Romeo, accompanied by his friends, crashed at the Capuletââ¬â¢s party and instantly fell in love with Juliet. At that time, when Juliet was falling in love with Romeo, she had no idea who he was. Juliet came to know more about Romeo from her cousin, who identified him as a family enemy. Romeo and his friends were ousted by the Capulet family from the party. Some days later, Romeo returned back to Julietââ¬â¢s home where they met on her balcony. He slept with her and promised to marry her. The two families issued various threats against each other, and Romeo accidentally killed Julietââ¬â¢s cousin (Bly 17). Romeo was banished from the city. Conversely, in the West Side Story, Tony was Polish while Maria was a Puerto Rican residing in New York. Just like the Montague and the Capulet, the two groups had people who protected them regardless of the aggressiveness between the two families. Tony is killed by a gang in the end as a result of the union between him and Maria (Laurents 3). Maria decided to move on after Tonyââ¬â¢s death despite the strong love she had for him. The West Side Story plot and performance is in Manhattan Upper West Side. The story revolves around the conflict between two youth

Five Forces of Competition Essay Example for Free
Five Forces of Competition Essay Air travel has changed the way people live and experience the world today. The airline industry is a strategic sector that plays a fundamental role in the globalization of other industries since it promotes tourism, world trade, foreign investment and, therefore, leads to economic growth. However, all airlines within the industry operate in a highly dynamic environment where various legal, social, technological and economic forces interact with each other, thus influencing their decisions and actions In the industry where airlines can face severe financial distress due to oil crisis, recessions and terrorist attacks, In order to survive, as well as succeed, the business needs to assess its competitive environment and identify key factors that may influence its actions (Porter, 1998, p. 5). The airline industry is very competitive and Michael Porterââ¬â¢s five-forces model can be used to analyse the intensity of the competition and the profitability of this industry. Porterââ¬â¢s five forces model is a business unit strategy tool which is used to make an analysis of the value of an industry structure (Hubbard, 2004, pg 35). The analysis is made by the identification of 5 fundamental competitive forces. These include: Threat of new entrants is highà One of the forces identified by this model is the threat of new entrants which refers to the possibility of new competitors entering the industry and undermining the profits of the established businesses. In the world today, the airline industry is so saturated that there is hardly space for a newcomer to enter the market. The biggest for this is the cost of entry. The airline industry is one of the most expensive industries, due to the cost of buying and leasing aircrafts, safety and security measures, customer service and manpower. Other barriers to entry which will recess new comers into the airline industry include Government restrictions and high capital costs to develop new airlines. However, the entry barriers for new airlines is lower today since the Australian domestic airline market was deregulated in 1990. This has produced far greater competition than before deregulation in most markets. The deregulation has allowed Jetstar and Tiger Airways enter the market and reduce the market share for Virgin Blue and with the added competition, together with pricing freedom, means that there is a major onstraint on profitability for the airline industry. Moreover if borrowing is cheap the likelihood of more airlines entering the industry is higher. Bargaining power of Buyers is high The bargaining power of buyers is another force that can affect the competitive position of a company (Porter, 1998, p. 48). This refers to the amount of pressure customers can place on a business, thus, affecting its prices, volume and profit potential (Porter, 1998, p. 45). The various airlines flying from the Gold Coast airport are competing for the same customer, which also results in strengthening the buyer power. Individuals wishing to travel to and from the Coolangatta airport are presented with various choices when selecting an airline but price is usually the most important factor, especially for students and families. Hence, the bargaining power of customers in the airline industry is very high since they are price sensitive and search for the best deals available. Virgin Blue attracts travellers that are price sensitive by offering them low fares and those that are convenience oriented by providing them with frequent flights. Qantas on the other hand has created a frequent flyer program to create switching costs which may be a significant factor to a traveller when choosing which airline to fly with. Bargaining Power of Suppliers is high Suppliers can also exercise considerable pressure on a company by increasing prices or lowering the quality of products offered which are mainly dominated by Boeing and Airbus. The bargaining power of suppliers depends on supplier concentration, substitute supplies, switching costs, threat of forward integration and buyer information. However, other suppliers who work with the airline such as the providers of on board snacks do not have the same bargaining power as they are a larger industry which allows for Virgin Blue to have a choice over who they are purchasing from. Virgin Blue will purchase their on board snacks from the supplier which is the most economic so Virgin Blue can make a higher profit margin from the goods when they are sold. Threat of Substitutes is low for international carriers/ little higher for short distance The availability and threat of substitutes is another factor that can affect competition within the airline industry. It refers to the likelihood that customers may switch to another product or service that performs similar functions (Stahl, M, Grigsby D 1997, pg 145). Substitutes for air travel include travelling by train, bus or car to the desired destination. The degree of this threat depends on various factors such as money, convenience, time and personal preference of travellers. The competition from substitutes is affected by the ease of with which buyers can change over to a substitute. A key consideration is usually the buyers switching costs, however due to their low fare non-stop flights, Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Tiger airways can lure both price sensitive and convenience oriented travellers away from these substitutes. Competitive Rivalry is highà Industries that are very competitive generally earn low profits and returns since the cost of competition is high. The airline industry is usually characterized by the cut-throat competition that exists among the rival airlines due to its low cost nature. Since the carriers are involved in a constant struggle to take away the market share from each other, industry growth is average and as it is easy for buyers to switch between the airline companies, depending on price, the rivalry is increased. Rivalry is also high in the airline industry due to high fixed costs, as much of the cost of a flight is fixed, there is a great opportunity for airlines to sell unsold seats cheaply, which resolve in pricing wars between the airlines (Hubbard, 2004, pg 38). The airlines are continually competing against each other in terms of prices, technology, in-flight entertainment, customer services and many more areas. The net result of this competition between companies is an overall slow market growth rate. In conclusion we can understand that the airline industry is very competitive and Michael Porters five-forces model can be used to explain why the potential for returns is so low in this industry. Firstly, the threat of new companies entering the industry is high and the entry barriers are low. Secondly, the bargaining power of customers is high since they are price sensitive and search for the best deals. The third force, bargaining position of suppliers, is strong since they are concentrated and this limits the control airlines have over suppliers to reduce prices and earn higher profits. The availability and threat of substitutes is another factor that can affect a companyââ¬â¢s competitive position. However, the degree of this threat depends on various factors such as time, money, convenience and personal preferences of travellers. The final force in Porters model is competitive rivalry between the companies within an industry. Cut-throat competition exists among the airlines and since there is a constant struggle for market share, the over all profit potential of this industry is low.

Chernobyl :: Ukraine Disaster History Essays
Chernobyl 1986 was a year of several meaningful worldwide events, some of which included the Voyager 2 got details and pictures of Uranus, the space shuttle Challenger exploded on takeoff, and Haleyââ¬â¢s comet soared past Earth (infoplease.com). Perhaps the event that alarmed the world the most, however, was the major nuclear accident that occurred at the nuclear power plant Chernobyl. The nuclear disaster that occurred at Chernobyl in 1986 (Lecture 4/1/02), has forever changed the way that nuclear power plants are viewed by the world. Chernobyl is now an abandoned city in north Ukraine because at 1:23 am on April 26th (Chernobyl.com), during an ââ¬Å"unauthorized test of one of the plant's four reactors, engineers initiated an uncontrolled chain reaction in the core of the reactor after disabling emergency backup systemsâ⬠(infoplease.com). The type of reactor used at Chernobyl was a graphite-water reactor (Lecture 3/25/02). This means that the moderator of the reactor is graphite, and the coolant is water (Lecture 3/25/02). According to Chernobyl.com, technicians allowed the power level in the fourth reactor to fall to an extremely low level, causing a core meltdown. An explosion ripped the top off the containment building, expelling radioactive material into the atmosphere for over ten days (Chernobyl.com). More was then released in a fire that followed, due to a second explosion that allowed air to rush into the reactor (world-nuclear.org). It was only after Swedish instruments detected a problem from the explosion that Soviet authorities admitted that an accident had occurred (infoplease.com). The reactor core was sealed off by air-dropping a cement mixture which included 5,000 tons of boron, dolomite, sand, clay and lead, but not before eight tons of radioactive material had escaped into the atmosphere (infoplease.com). It is estimated that all of the xenon gas, about half of the iodine and caesium, and at least 5% of the remaining radioactive material in the Chernobyl reactor core was released in the accident (world-nuclear.org). Over twenty firefighters died instantly from overexposure to radioactivity, while hundreds suffered from severe radiation sickness (infoplease.

Effect of culture in business Essay
1. A growing number of Americans work for foreign-owned firms in the United States. Do you think that these American employees are being influenced by the foreign ownerââ¬â¢s approach to management and the culture of the country of the owner? Because of globalization, businesses are open to do business in new markets and improving profits. Also because of globalization, companies are faced with different cultures, religion and norms. For a company to do business in another country, a manager needs to understand the differences associated with the host country. ââ¬Å"Globalization is defined as this interdependency of transportation, distribution, communication, and economic networks across international bordersâ⬠(Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske, 2012, p 57). Each firm has their own organizational culture. According to Hellriegel, Slocum and Woodman (2001), organizational culture represents a complex pattern of beliefs, expectations, values and behaviors shared by organizational members. The knowledge of the culture in which an employee is working is crucial. ââ¬Å"In a dynamic and fast changing environment the inter and intra organizational behavior changes the productivity and growth trendsâ⬠(Chat urvedi, 2002). Because of the organizational culture most foreign-owned firms will tend to impose that culture on their employees. Just like U.S. companies settling abroad, foreign-owned companies will face some difficulties operating in a country with different culture. Based on Hofstedeââ¬â¢s research, which studies how values in the workplace are influenced by culture, four dimensions have been ââ¬Å"identified as explaining: Uncertainty avoidance: ââ¬Å"degree to which people are comfortable with ambiguous situations and with the inability to predict future events with accuracyâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69). Masculinity-Femininity: A culture that has a high masculinity orientation tends to emphasize on dominance, assertiveness, and interdependence. A culture with tendency of femininity orientation will emphasize more on interdependence, compassion, and emotional openness. Individualism-Collectivism: ââ¬Å"Tendency of a cultureââ¬â¢s norms and values to emphasize on satisfying individual needs or group needsâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69). Power distance: ââ¬Å"Degree to which members of a society accept differences in power and status among themselvesâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 69) Because each culture fits differently in the four dimensions, a foreign-owned firm will keep its own culture as it will be easier to deal with than having different organizational cultures in each country it operates. Americans who work for those companies are indeed influenced by their approach of management. 2. Assume that you want to develop your global skills so that you can pursue international assignments with your company. Identify five skills that you would want to develop and describe how you would go about improving these skills. ââ¬Å"Globalization is defined as this interdependency of transportation, distribution, communication, and economic networks across international bordersâ⬠(Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske, 2012, p 57). Managers are more and more in contact with different cultures. According to HRMagazine (2012), business skills, clture and customs skills, geographic, political and economic skills need to be developed. Based on Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske (2012), the five main skills are: Global strategic skills: knowing how the economy (i.e. global financial markets), politics (i.e. foreign affairs, international law) are good ways for managers to know how to conduct business in another country. Team-building skills: Companies require more and more that their employees know how to work as part of a team. Team-building is a way to have more done more efficiently. A manager should know how to delegate work and know what each team members can or cannot do. Organization skills: It is important to know how employees react to certain management approach. McGregorââ¬â¢s motivational theory X and Y provides management approaches that can apply to motivate employees. Communication skills: Communication is essential when working abroad. It is imperative that a manager or employee be able to communicate with peers and superiors effectively. Transfer of knowledge skills: ââ¬Å"Learning about a practice, technique, or approach in one country that can be transferred elsewhere is a skill that managers can apply on a regular basisâ⬠(Gibson et al., 2012, p 62). 3. Describe the attitudes a manager would need to be successful and effective in managing in India, China, and Saudi Arabia. A manager would need to have the same basic skills in order to a successful and effective manager in India, China, and Saudi Arabia. According to Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske Strong technical skills Good language skills Strong desire to work overseas Knowledge of the culture Well-adjusted family situation Spouse support Behavioral flexibility Adaptability Good relational ability Stress management skills According Goodall and Warner (2007), a manager who wants to work in China would need to be: Open-minded to the culture shock. Desire to learn the language and culture. Good communication skills. Strong organizational commitment: ââ¬Å"Think not what your company can do for you, but what you can do for your companyâ⬠(Goodall et al., 2007, p 13). In China, it is hard to retain employees due to the competition of labor. China does not have enough skilled labors and is experiencing tremendous growth economically. To be an effective manager, one should be able to retain employees and adapt to the culture in order to not lose such precious asset. According to Bhuian, Al-shammari, & Jefri (2001), a manager needs have a strong organizational commitment, strong desire to work with foreign assignment, and especially good communication skills in order to work in Saudi Arabia. Trainings should be available to the expatriate manager. Gibson et al. identified three steps: ââ¬Å"Predepartureâ⬠, which helps the manager prepare for the culture shock. Overseas Assignments, which is to help the manager ease into the culture. Having a mentor or a guide to introduce him or her to the culture. Repatriation, which is helping the manager adjusting back to his own culture when returning from assignment. References Assess-and improve-your global skills. (2012). _HRMagazine, 57_(8), 79.
